Build quality is excellent on both, with the Air’s unibody aluminum shell slightly lighter overall.

Software and ecosystem

The Air runs macOS, tightly integrated with iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch — Handoff and Universal Clipboard matter a lot if you’re already on an iPhone. The XPS 14 runs Windows, which remains the default for most business software, PC gaming, and environments that standardize on Windows for compatibility reasons.

The MacBook Air (M5) wins on battery life, fan noise, and Apple ecosystem integration. The Dell XPS 14 wins on sustained performance under heavy load, display options, and port selection. For most everyday productivity use, the Air’s battery advantage is the more noticeable day-to-day difference; for anyone regularly running sustained heavy workloads, the XPS 14’s active cooling avoids the throttling the fanless Air can hit.
