Intel spent well over a decade building brand recognition around Core i3, i5, i7 and i9, then largely retired that naming for its newest mobile chip lineup in favor of Core Ultra. The rebrand wasn’t just cosmetic: Core Ultra represents a genuine architectural shift in how Intel builds its laptop chips, even if the new naming initially confused shoppers used to the old system.

Why Intel Dropped the "i"

The Core Ultra branding marks Intel’s move to a chiplet-based design, where a single chip package combines several smaller, separately manufactured dies, handling compute, graphics and other functions, rather than one monolithic piece of silicon manufactured as a single unit. This approach let Intel mix and match manufacturing processes for different parts of the chip, using the best available process for each component rather than forcing everything onto one process node. It also enabled Intel to add a dedicated neural processing unit, or NPU, as a standard built-in component for the first time, which is the feature most associated with the “AI PC” positioning built around Core Ultra chips.

What the NPU Actually Adds

The NPU built into Core Ultra chips is designed to accelerate AI-related tasks, such as background blur and eye contact correction during video calls, noise suppression, and increasingly on-device components of Windows’ built-in AI features, without relying on the CPU or GPU to handle that work. Running these tasks on a dedicated NPU is generally more power-efficient than running them on the CPU, which can extend battery life during video calls and similar AI-assisted tasks compared with older chips that lacked dedicated AI hardware.

How the Tiers Break Down

Core Ultra chips are organized into tiers similar in spirit to the old i5/i7/i9 system, now expressed as Core Ultra 5, Core Ultra 7, and Core Ultra 9, with a numeric model number following that indicates generation and specific configuration. As with the previous naming scheme, higher tiers generally mean more CPU cores, stronger integrated graphics, and higher sustained power limits, though checking the specific model number and, ideally, independent benchmarks remains important since performance can vary meaningfully within the same tier across different generations.

Integrated Graphics Took a Real Step Forward

Alongside the NPU, Core Ultra chips brought a meaningfully upgraded integrated graphics architecture based on Intel’s Arc graphics technology, closing much of the gap that used to exist between Intel integrated graphics and AMD’s competing integrated graphics chips. This has made thin laptops built around Core Ultra chips noticeably more capable for light gaming, video editing and creative work than earlier Intel-based ultrabooks, without needing a separate dedicated graphics chip.

What Buyers Should Actually Check

Because Core Ultra spans a wide range of laptops from thin ultrabooks to gaming machines, the tier number alone doesn’t guarantee a specific level of performance. Checking the full model number, the laptop’s cooling design, and independent reviews of that specific model remains the most reliable way to judge real-world performance, just as it was with the previous Core i-series naming. The NPU’s practical benefit also still depends on which specific software features someone actually uses day to day, since not every application takes advantage of it yet.

Intel Core Ultra represents a genuine architectural upgrade over the old Core i-series lineup, built around a chiplet design, a dedicated NPU for AI tasks, and meaningfully improved integrated graphics. The rebrand can feel confusing at first, but the underlying tier logic, higher numbers generally meaning more performance, still applies, and checking the specific model number and independent benchmarks remains the safest way to judge a laptop’s real capabilities.
