Part of our Phone and Laptop Brands Compared: The Complete Guide guide.

Both phones sit at the top of their respective lineups, and the choice between them mostly comes down to ecosystem preference rather than a clear performance gap — the two are closer in real-world capability than the spec sheets suggest.

Chip and performance

The iPhone 17 Pro Max runs Apple’s latest A-series Pro chip, which continues to lead in single-core benchmark performance and sustained thermal efficiency thanks to Apple’s tight hardware-software integration. The Galaxy S26 Ultra runs the latest Snapdragon flagship tier, which closes most of the multi-core gap and generally matches or exceeds the iPhone in raw multi-threaded workloads like video export, though single-core responsiveness still favors Apple’s chip in most independent testing.

Display

Both use a high-refresh-rate OLED panel in the 120Hz range with strong peak brightness for outdoor visibility. The Galaxy S26 Ultra’s display is marginally larger and includes the S Pen digitizer layer built into the panel — a feature the iPhone has no equivalent for, and the main reason Note-line loyalists still gravitate toward the Ultra tier specifically.

Camera

The iPhone 17 Pro Max pairs a 48MP main sensor with a 48MP telephoto offering roughly 5x optical zoom. The Galaxy S26 Ultra typically ships with a higher-resolution main sensor (200MP) and a longer periscope telephoto reaching 10x optical zoom — the Galaxy wins on pure zoom range, while the iPhone tends to edge ahead on video recording consistency and color science that many reviewers describe as more natural straight out of the camera.

Battery and charging

Real-world battery life is close between the two, with the Galaxy S26 Ultra’s larger physical size allowing a somewhat bigger battery. Samsung’s wired charging speed is meaningfully faster on paper, but Apple’s charging curve is tuned to protect long-term battery health, so the practical gap during a normal day’s use is smaller than the wattage numbers alone suggest.

Ecosystem and software support

This is where the decision usually gets made: the iPhone locks you into iMessage, AirDrop, and tight Mac/AirPods/Apple Watch integration, with typically five-plus years of major OS updates. The Galaxy S26 Ultra integrates more openly with Windows PCs and other Android devices, includes the S Pen for note-taking and sketching, and Samsung has extended its own update commitment to match Apple’s in recent generations.

Bottom line

Choose the iPhone 17 Pro Max if you’re already in the Apple ecosystem or want the most consistent video quality. Choose the Galaxy S26 Ultra if you want S Pen functionality, longer zoom reach, or you’re on Windows and Android already. Neither is a clear across-the-board winner — the gap that used to favor Apple on raw performance and Samsung on hardware features has narrowed on both sides.
