Quick take

What officially qualifies a laptop as an AI PC, what the required NPU actually does today, and whether it's worth prioritizing when buying a new computer.

“AI PC” has become one of the most heavily marketed laptop categories in recent years, stamped across product pages and store displays with a promise of smarter, more capable computing. Behind the marketing, the term does correspond to a real, specific hardware requirement, though what that hardware actually delivers in daily use is more modest than the branding might suggest.

The Hardware Requirement Behind the Label

At its core, an AI PC is a laptop or desktop that includes a dedicated neural processing unit, or NPU, a specialized chip component built specifically to accelerate machine learning computations efficiently, alongside the traditional CPU and GPU. Microsoft’s specific Copilot+ PC certification, the most prominent branded version of this category, requires an NPU capable of a minimum sustained performance threshold, along with baseline requirements for RAM and storage, before a laptop can carry that specific certification and unlock certain exclusive on-device AI features built into Windows.

What the NPU Actually Does Today

Running AI tasks on a dedicated NPU rather than the CPU or GPU is primarily about efficiency: the same AI computation generally uses meaningfully less power on an NPU, which matters for battery life on tasks that would otherwise run continuously, and it frees up the CPU and GPU to handle other work simultaneously. Practical features currently leaning on NPU acceleration include real-time video call enhancements like background blur and eye contact correction, live captioning and translation, on-device image generation and editing tools, voice-based typing and transcription, and a growing set of on-device generative AI assistant features being built into both Windows and macOS.

Why the Everyday Benefit Still Varies Widely

The practical value of AI PC hardware today depends heavily on which specific software features a person actually uses. Someone who regularly takes video calls, uses live captioning, or relies on on-device AI writing and image tools will likely notice real, if modest, battery and responsiveness benefits from NPU acceleration. Someone whose computer use is centered on browsing, office documents and media consumption may not interact with NPU-accelerated features at all, in which case the AI PC hardware, while present, isn’t actively changing their day-to-day experience yet.

Software Support Is Still Catching Up to the Hardware

A recurring pattern with AI PC hardware is that the NPU capability has generally arrived in laptops before the broader software ecosystem has fully caught up to take advantage of it. Operating system features, creative software, and third-party applications are gradually adding NPU-accelerated functionality, but the pace of that software rollout has been more gradual than the hardware marketing might suggest, meaning some of an AI PC’s promised capability represents forward-looking potential as much as an immediate, fully realized benefit.

Should It Influence a Buying Decision Today

For most buyers, an NPU meeting current AI PC thresholds is becoming a standard, unavoidable feature of new mid-range and premium laptops regardless of any explicit interest in AI features, simply because current-generation chips from Intel, AMD, Qualcomm and Apple all include one by default. This makes actively prioritizing “AI PC” branding less important than evaluating a laptop on its core CPU, GPU, RAM, display and battery life, since the NPU capability will very likely be present anyway in any reasonably current mid-range or premium laptop purchase.

Bottom Line

Qualifying as one of the AI PCs now on the market reflects a genuine, specific hardware requirement centered on a dedicated NPU, but the real-world benefit today depends heavily on which AI-accelerated features a buyer actually plans to use, and software support is still catching up to the hardware capability already shipping. Rather than treating the AI PC label as a primary deciding factor, evaluating a laptop’s core specifications and checking whether specific NPU-accelerated features matter personally is the more useful approach.
