Quick take

How LCD display technology actually works, where it still holds real advantages over OLED, and where it falls behind on contrast and black levels.

LCD (liquid crystal display) technology remains widely used across budget and mid-range smartphones, most computer monitors, and a large share of televisions, despite OLED’s growing prominence in premium devices, because LCD retains genuine practical advantages in specific areas even as OLED has closed much of the historical image quality gap between the two technologies.

How LCD Technology Actually Produces an Image

LCD displays work by using a separate backlight, typically LED-based in modern displays, that shines light through a layer of liquid crystal material, which twists and untwists in response to electrical current to control how much of that backlight passes through each individual pixel, meaning LCD panels fundamentally rely on a constant backlight source that then gets selectively blocked or allowed through, a meaningfully different approach from OLED, where each individual pixel generates its own light directly.

Why LCD Struggles With True Black Levels

Because LCD pixels work by blocking backlight rather than simply turning off entirely, LCD panels can’t achieve the perfectly black, zero-light-emission black levels that OLED displays produce naturally, since even LCD’s most effective light-blocking still allows some small amount of backlight to leak through, an inherent limitation that gives OLED displays a meaningfully higher contrast ratio and generally more impactful appearance for dark scenes in movies and games.

Where LCD Still Holds Genuine Advantages

LCD displays generally remain less expensive to manufacture than OLED at comparable sizes, made LCD panels don’t carry OLED’s theoretical long-term risk of permanent image burn-in from static on-screen elements displayed for extended periods, and LCD panels can often achieve higher sustained full-screen brightness levels more easily than OLED, since LCD’s backlight isn’t subject to the same per-pixel heat and longevity constraints that limit OLED’s sustained peak brightness in certain conditions.

IPS as the Most Common Modern LCD Variant

The large majority of current LCD displays specifically use IPS (in-plane switching) panel technology, a specific LCD variant that offers meaningfully better viewing angles and color accuracy compared with older, now largely discontinued LCD panel types like TN, making “IPS LCD” or simply “IPS” the most common label used to describe quality modern LCD displays rather than generic unqualified LCD terminology.

Why Budget and Mid-Range Devices Still Favor LCD

LCD’s lower manufacturing cost compared with OLED at equivalent display sizes remains the primary reason manufacturers continue widely using LCD panels specifically in budget and mid-range smartphones, monitors and televisions, allowing meaningfully lower overall device pricing while still delivering perfectly adequate, if not class-leading, everyday visual quality for typical uses like web browsing, document work and general media consumption.

Bottom Line

LCD display technology works by selectively blocking a constant backlight source through liquid crystal material, an approach that can’t match OLED’s true black levels and contrast ratio but retains genuine advantages in manufacturing cost, burn-in resistance, and sustained brightness. LCD, particularly modern IPS variants, remains a genuinely reasonable and widely used choice, especially in budget and mid-range devices where OLED’s premium cost isn’t justified.
