I was a staunch Windows laptop user once.
I had never used MacBook much in my life even though I see that most people who are in the creative and tech side use MacBook more than they use a Windows laptop.
I bought a MacBook Pro once but it was difficult to find the cracked versions of the software that I was using on Windows while on the MacBook system, everything was paid for. It was difficult to find the cracked versions to be used on the MacBook operating system.
At that time, I was a student and later I became a struggling writer. I didn’t have money to buy expensive software so I relied mostly on cracked or demo versions which expired after 30 days. MacBooks were expensive and on top of that they didn’t come up with lots of features and flexibility which I found on Windows laptops.
Windows laptops were cheaper and they were easy to use and customize as per one’s will. It was not that I never used a MacBook before. I did but the experience was not up to my expectations.
The first time I made the switch from the Macbook to Windows.
My first Macbook laptop was an i7 Macbook Pro which cost me nearly $ 1900. I used it for a few days and being an avid Windows user, it was difficult for me to understand the graphic user interface of that MacBook.
After a few days of using it, I was fed up with it. I made a partition on the system and turned it into a dual-operating system. I started using Windows alternately on the MacBook and slowly with time, I deleted the Macintosh partition and started using Windows completely on the MacBook which defied the purpose of buying the MacBook in the first place.
It was weird and people thought I was an idiot as I was more comfortable in the windows.
I later sold the Macbook because I didn’t find it that useful.
The cult of Apple and the charm of owning a Macbook
Then one of my friends had a knocked-out Macbook Air. He was not using it anymore. As the story went, he was cleaning it one day and lots of water fell on it accidentally. The battery stopped working after that.
I had to go to a corporate meeting and it was instructed to me that I had to use only an Apple Macbook in the meeting because of the prestige issue or something.
No matter how expensive your Windows laptop would be, it would always appear to be cheaper than an Apple product. As if it shows your choice in choosing a substandard system.
If there is one thing I have noticed in metropolitan cities, then it is that people are really impressed with you when you have any Apple equipment in your hand, even if it is an older model.
Apple has grown like a cult over the years. The iPhone started it all. Earlier iPhones were very expensive compared to other phones in the market and most people didn’t see any value in investing in a phone that was multiple times the cost of the phones available in the market. It was assumed that only a selected few with extra money or tech-savvy brought the Apple systems.
Soon a mindset began to grow that people who use Apple prefer quality over quantity and are wealthy people because only rich people can afford this equipment.
In order to look rich easily people started buying Apple equipment. That is where the kidney-selling joke started which by the way was a true incident. I read it somewhere.
I have seen people judging me over my Android phone even if it was more costly than the iPhone. It is like people who have Apple in their hands connect with each other as easily as if they are also from the same college.
Apple over the years has developed a certain mindset for the people that Apple is only for a few niche crowd who are wealthy and posh. To an extent, it is true because most people would think twice before investing in a piece of gadget whose simple function was to make the calls.
How I became a MacBook fan !!
So for that meeting, I took my friend’s MacBook Air which he bought in 2013. It was an i5 with 128 GB storage and 4 Gb of RAM. The configuration sounds quite slow compared to the high-tech gadgets we find available today.
I had it repaired and then used it for a month before I decided I had to buy a new one. In my mind, if this was working so well after ten years, the new Macbook would be racing like Usain Bolt.
An earlier me would have wanted a Windows laptop because, on it, I could use any software and find cracks in it.
I don’t use cracks anymore and now I have reached an age where I know what I use and how much I use. I don’t try many unknown applications on a laptop and I want it to be hassle-free.
MacBook Air gave me that.
It was extremely thin and light, unlike Windows laptops which weighed like Hercules’ newborn son, they were very handy. The cherry on top, they didn’t heat after a few minutes of use.
I don’t know what hardware tech guys at Apple are using but there was no fan or anything. You can put it on your lap and it won’t heat up that much to burn your balls and make you impotent.
The keyboard was easy to write and move fingers on. Earlier I had a MSI laptop and I had to shut down the trackpad using function keys when I would write something on it. The palms of my hand would keep displacing the cursor accidentally. Even though the trackpad of the Macbook is way bigger they never came in the way of my writing. I appreciate their peaceful nature.
After I bought the latest M1 processor MacBook Air, I thought if the 2013 version of MacBook is such a good run, how well would the functioning of the M1 be? But wait, I was up against a surprise when I used it.
Using the new M1 Macbook Air.
There was a significant difference in the working of the new Macbook Air I bought but it wasn’t something I would spend money on if I already own an earlier version. The new MacBook was faster but it wasn’t much faster than my 2013 one. MacBooks are gems when it comes to speed, no matter which one you choose.
Sadly, Apple has stopped updating the 2013 MacBook I had. I have no problem with that because my 2013 one still works like a charm.
It is also lighter and easier to use. I couldn’t find any significant changes in the 2013 version and the 2022 version of the MacBook Air, except for a little bit of hardware design.
Now I understand why most people prefer a Macbook over a Windows laptop.
The Windows laptops are usually assembled by different companies and they use different hardware depending upon the company. There is always a headache of downloading and updating drivers based on the hardware requirement.
That was not a problem with the MacBook. You format it once and you are good to go.
The design of the Macbook
There is a certain ease of eye while working on Mac as well which I noticed. Everything is rounded and there are no sharp vertices, not in the body, nor in the software. Even the application logos are rounded in shape.
I think they might have copyrighted the thing because I don’t see other companies using it either.
It was then I understood why Apple the company is valued at over a trillion dollars. They are really good at what they do and they really about the customer experience.
Coming to the software in the Macbook.
I was also impressed by the way the software was installed on the Mac. You just have to drag and drop the icons in the app folder and that’s it.
No more telling the locations. No more hidden web browsers you have to worry about which covertly install themselves and disrupt the normal working.
Few applications on Windows are so crooked that they would install search engines on their own which were actually viruses. Then you have to find tutorials on YouTube to remove them.
There is no such problem on MacBook. Frankly, it is a thousand times easier to install and run applications on a Macbook.
Yes, you will need some time to adjust to MacBook when you shift from Windows. It would last for three to four days depending upon how much you are using your laptop but after a while, trust me on this, you won’t return to Windows.
Why is Windows not doing anything about it?
I wonder why companies using Windows not doing anything to change their laptops. Microsoft, who created Windows, too has a line of their own model laptops which somehow don’t work and don’t sell. Poor guys were trying to compete with the Apple. Still, they produced sub-standard products.
I mean come on you have all the money in this world. You have some of the best of the best people and yet you are unable to produce a laptop that is light, user-friendly, and virus hater.
Kudos to the idea of giving a huge trackpad on MacBook. Whoever did it, should be awarded the Nobel Prize for it. It cannot be copyrighted, right? It is just a hardware requirement. Give it a different shape Windows people and put it on your laptops. Who is stopping you??
Why the companies like Dell, Acer, Asus, and Lenovo not copy these features from MacBook when they have created their entire industries copying features of Apple?
If it wasn’t for Apple and Steve Jobs, the advent of smartphones would have been delayed for two to three years as Blackberry was ruling the world with its qwerty keypads in the first decade of 21st century.
Just make it better for people. I understand the hardware specs can be expensive but designing is not. It is a one-time job. It’s simple. Put your people together and come up with a great product. If you won’t do it now, in the future I see lots of people moving towards MacBook and never returning.
A Macbook is my final choice from now on.
If a ten-year-old laptop is so good that it runs super fast even today, why would I buy a Windows laptop that starts getting slow one month after you have bought it?
The average age for my Windows laptops has been only 3 years. After every 3 years, I had to buy a new laptop. I was doing that for nearly two decades.
Now if I have to invest, I will invest one time by spending a little bit more and buy a MacBook. I know it will last longer than any other laptop.
I haven’t yet faced any problems with repair as well which I have heard is quite costly. But I don’t care anymore. Macbooks in general are a great run and very easy to use.
How good do you feel about your laptop when you never have to shut them down?
It easily goes into sleep mode when you shut the flap and opens very easily. With the new M1 touch button, it becomes easier to open now. I don’t have to insert the password again and again. I have anyways gifted the new M1 laptop to my brother and have started using the old one.
I don’t want to be distracted by the technology now. I only want my Chrome and Microsoft Word to do most of my tasks.
Late it was for me but I am not going back to Windows laptop again. This doesn’t mean I have discarded Windows forever. I just bought a $ 2000 PC workstation which I love. I love working on Windows. Both have their pros and cons but when it comes to customer satisfaction, I think Apple wins by a huge margin.
