Integrated graphics used to be shorthand for “can’t game,” a checkbox feature included only because a laptop needed some way to output an image to the screen. That reputation is increasingly outdated. Integrated graphics have improved enough in recent years that the decision to pay extra for a dedicated GPU deserves a genuinely fresh look rather than an automatic assumption.

What Makes Graphics "Integrated"

Integrated graphics, sometimes called an iGPU, are built directly into the same chip package as the CPU rather than existing as a separate component with its own dedicated memory. This shared design means integrated graphics draw on the computer’s regular system RAM for graphics memory instead of having fast dedicated video memory (VRAM) of their own, which has traditionally been the biggest performance bottleneck compared with a dedicated GPU. It also means integrated graphics use less power and generate less heat, which is why they remain the default choice for thin, fanless or lightly cooled laptops.

Why Integrated Graphics Have Improved So Much

Chipmakers have invested heavily in integrated graphics architecture in recent years, driven partly by the popularity of thin laptops that have no room for a separate graphics chip. Intel’s Arc-based integrated graphics in its Core Ultra chips and AMD’s Radeon integrated graphics in recent Ryzen chips both represent substantial architectural improvements over their predecessors from just a few years earlier, closing much of the gap with entry-level dedicated GPUs for many tasks. Apple’s M-series chips take a related but distinct approach, using unified memory shared directly between CPU and GPU, which sidesteps some of the traditional integrated graphics memory bandwidth bottleneck entirely.

What Integrated Graphics Handle Comfortably Today

Modern integrated graphics comfortably manage everyday use, video playback including high-resolution and HDR content, general productivity, web browsing, and increasingly, real creative work like photo editing and moderate video editing. Many current-generation integrated graphics chips can also run popular games at reduced settings and resolutions with playable frame rates, a genuine shift from a few years ago when integrated graphics struggled with anything beyond simple or older titles.

Where a Dedicated GPU Still Clearly Wins

Despite the improvements, a dedicated GPU remains the meaningfully better choice for demanding modern gaming at high settings and resolution, serious 3D rendering and animation work, machine learning workloads that benefit from dedicated GPU acceleration, and professional video editing involving high-resolution footage, effects-heavy timelines, or GPU-accelerated export. Dedicated GPUs also come with their own fast VRAM, which becomes increasingly important as game and creative software resolution and complexity increase, since integrated graphics sharing system RAM simply cannot match that dedicated bandwidth for the most demanding workloads.

Making the Right Call for Your Own Use

For anyone whose computer use is centered on browsing, office work, streaming and light creative tasks, integrated graphics are now genuinely sufficient rather than a compromise, and choosing a laptop without a dedicated GPU typically means better battery life and a lighter, cooler, quieter machine. For serious gaming, professional creative work, or machine learning experimentation, a dedicated GPU remains worth the added cost, weight and reduced battery life it typically brings with it.

Integrated graphics have closed much of the gap that used to separate them clearly from dedicated GPUs, and for a large share of everyday computing tasks, they’re genuinely good enough in 2026. The dividing line for choosing a dedicated GPU has shifted toward serious gaming, 3D work, and GPU-accelerated professional software, rather than applying broadly to anyone who wants a laptop that handles more than basic browsing.
