For general productivity, including heavier browser tab usage, video calls, and standard office software, 16GB has become the realistic mainstream baseline and offers meaningfully smoother multitasking than 8GB. Content creators working with photo editing, moderate video editing or running multiple creative applications simultaneously typically benefit from 32GB, while professionals doing heavy video editing, 3D rendering, software development with large codebases, or running virtual machines often need 32GB or more to avoid becoming memory-constrained.

Why Soldered RAM Has Become the Norm

A growing number of thin and lightweight laptops, including all current MacBooks and many ultrabook-class Windows laptops, now solder RAM directly onto the motherboard rather than using removable memory modules. This design choice generally allows thinner chassis designs and, in some architectures, faster memory bandwidth, but it comes with a significant trade-off: the RAM capacity chosen at the time of purchase becomes permanent, with no ability to add more later. This makes the RAM decision at checkout considerably higher-stakes on these laptops than it used to be on machines with upgradable memory slots.

When Upgradable RAM Still Matters

Some laptops, particularly larger, thicker models aimed at business use, gaming, or budget-conscious buyers, still include upgradable RAM slots. For anyone uncertain about their future RAM needs, or working with a tighter initial budget, choosing a laptop with upgradable memory provides genuine flexibility to add capacity later at a lower cost than buying more upfront, and it’s worth specifically checking for before assuming a laptop’s advertised base configuration is fixed.

Buying Advice Worth Following

Given how difficult and expensive it can be to add memory after the fact on a soldered-RAM laptop, erring toward more RAM than the bare minimum for current needs is generally the safer financial decision, since manufacturers typically charge a steep premium for RAM upgrades configured at checkout compared with the cost of adding equivalent memory to an upgradable system after purchase. For a laptop expected to last several years, buying slightly more RAM than seems necessary today is often a better hedge against future software becoming more memory-hungry than trying to precisely predict exact current needs.
