Buy a phone today and there’s a good chance its box doesn’t include a charger, which means picking the right one from a shelf of similar-looking bricks. That task is harder than it should be because fast charging standards are not universal. A charger that fast-charges one phone perfectly can charge a different phone at a fraction of the advertised speed, and the reason comes down to which proprietary or open standard each device actually speaks.

USB Power Delivery: The Closest Thing to Universal

USB Power Delivery, usually shortened to USB PD, is an open standard managed by the USB Implementers Forum and supported by most phone brands, laptop makers, and third-party charger manufacturers. USB PD lets a charger and device negotiate voltage and current dynamically, which is why a single well-rated USB PD charger can reasonably fast-charge phones, tablets and even many laptops from different manufacturers. This cross-compatibility is precisely why regulators in regions including the European Union have pushed the industry toward standardizing on USB-C and USB PD rather than allowing proprietary charging ports to persist.

Why Brand-Specific Standards Still Exist

Despite USB PD’s broad support, several major phone brands maintain their own proprietary fast-charging protocols that go beyond what standard USB PD delivers. OPPO and OnePlus’s SuperVOOC, Xiaomi’s HyperCharge, and similar branded systems from other manufacturers can push significantly higher wattage than a generic USB PD charger achieves with the same phone. These proprietary standards work by adding extra communication between the charger and phone that a standard USB PD charger simply doesn’t understand, which is why plugging one of these phones into a generic fast charger still charges it, just noticeably slower than the manufacturer’s own charger would.

The Cable Matters as Much as the Charger

A fast charger connected with the wrong cable will not deliver its full rated speed, regardless of how capable the charger itself is. Higher-wattage charging requires cables built to handle the increased current safely, and cheap or older USB-C cables are often only rated for basic data transfer or lower-power charging. Buying a high-wattage charger without checking that the accompanying cable is rated for the same wattage is one of the most common reasons people don’t get the charging speed they paid for.

Reading a Charger's Actual Specs

The safest way to match a charger to a phone is checking the manufacturer’s stated wattage and standard compatibility rather than assuming any charger labeled “fast charging” will hit a specific phone’s peak speed. Most phone manufacturers publish which charger wattage and standard is needed to reach their device’s maximum charging speed, and third-party chargers that explicitly list support for a specific brand’s protocol, alongside standard USB PD, are the most reliable way to get full speed from a non-original charger.

Why This Still Matters With Chargers Sold Separately

With many flagship phones no longer including a charger in the box, understanding fast charging standards has shifted from a nice-to-know detail to a genuinely practical purchasing decision. Buying a generic charger without checking protocol compatibility often means charging a phone at a fraction of its rated speed, while spending a little more on a charger that explicitly supports the phone’s specific fast-charging standard, or a well-rated universal USB PD charger for phones that rely on the open standard, delivers the speed the phone was actually designed for.

Bottom Line

Fast charging standards are not interchangeable, and a big wattage number on a charger’s box doesn’t guarantee that number will apply to any phone plugged into it. USB Power Delivery offers the broadest real-world compatibility across brands, but several manufacturers still rely on proprietary protocols for their fastest speeds, and pairing the wrong charger or cable with a phone is the most common reason fast charging doesn’t feel very fast at all.
